Michelson, the first American to receive a Nobel Prize in physics, best known for his participation in the Michelson Morley experiment, which measured the speed of light, was a professor from 1889 to 1892, before being chair of the physics department at the University of Chicago. Jonas Clark Hall was built in 1887 and was the first building in Clark University. It occupies the center of the campus and houses the departments of economics, psychology and education. In the basement of Jonas Clark Hall is the university`s cogeneration plant, which allows the university to recycle waste heat from electricity generation into hot water, heat and steam. It was updated in 2013 to become a more efficient 2.0 kWh natural gas engine.  Clark University, based in Worcester, Massachusetts, was founded in 1887 as the nation`s first multi-purpose institution. The Grateful Dead (1967 and 1969), the Jimi Hendrix Experience (1968), Janis Joplin (1969) and Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band (1974) played there.   A concert by Jimi Hendrix Experience on March 15, 1968 was professionally recorded and released in 1999 live at Clark University. In 1963, D`Army Bailey student invited Malcolm X to speak here.
Noam Chomsky spoke here on April 12, 2011, about the Israeli-Palestinian conflict and the Arab Spring.  This was the first lecture to be given at a spreetag in Clark. On October 16, 2014, President Bill Clinton spoke in Atwood as a supporter of Martha Coakley`s candidacy for governor of Massachusetts. [Citation required] In the summer of 2012, Clark University underwent further renovations. The city of Worcester allowed the university to close Downing Street to unite the campus.  The area has been converted into a pedestrian square. Johnson and Sanford Halls have been brought together at the Johnson Sanford Center with new social, study and multimedia spaces..
